Calcific Tendonitis

This is a condition where calcium deposits are found in the tendons, cause local irritation, severe pain, and loss of motion. The cause of the deposits is not absolutely clear, however, wear and tear of the rotator cuff can be associated with the condition. Conservative management using NSAIDS, cortisone injection, and physical therapy is the usual first line treatment for this condition. Cortisone injection can alleviate pain, but does not dissolve the calcium deposits. Arthroscopic or open removal of the calcium is indicated when conservative management has failed and an individual's quality of life is significantly affected.
